GROW was initially inspired by a commitment to reach out to young people in Glenrothes. The vision of the founders was to employ a youth worker who would encourage and support young people both in schools and in local churches whilst also providing assistance to teachers, chaplains and church youth leaders. This vision has not changed.
The project is funded locally by individuals and fundraising events and where possible from grant giving bodies. After 3 years of local fundraising and support from the Church of Scotland Parish Development Fund GROW employed the first worker in December 2008. Since that time each of our three workers has provided activities both in schools and churches for young people of all ages.
The Trust has 3 Trustees and a Management Group who are volunteers, provided by many of the town’s churches. They provide the legal and regulatory framework for the work. We also work in partnership with SU Scotland who provide invaluable support with training and line management.
The Trustees and Management Group support the worker by publicising the work in the town’s churches, encouraging the local congregation to assist by volunteering, giving financially, praying and facilitating links with both schools and churches.
Our current worker is Oskar Forbes.
I’m Oskar and I’m the youth worker for GROW. I’ve been involved in youth work since I was in my late teens working in various parts of the country including Aberdeen (where I studied Divinity at University), Glasgow, The Isle of Man, Perth, and Fife. Before coming to GROW in 2016 I was working as an RMPS Teacher but felt God calling me back to youth work and to GROW.
I grew up in a Christian home, and I came to faith around the age of six, though I’d say I was a Christian before then. I’ve never known a time when I’ve not at least known about God, if not known him personally and my faith continues to be the most important aspect of my life.
I’m a highly creative person, with a love of coffee, movies, tennis, photography and music. I love to hang out with my family and friends and I’m probably at my happiest when I’m surrounded by lots of people.”
